Traveling to professional conferences often brings to mind packed schedules, inspiring speakers, and valuable networking. Yet, sometimes the most meaningful moments happen unexpectedly, outside the formal agenda. During a recent trip to Atlanta for the 19th Annual System of Care Academy (SOCA) Conference, a simple act of kindness on the MARTA train left a lasting impression that went far beyond the conference itself.
The Unexpected Start to a Memorable Trip- By LisaMarie Pesante
After landing in Atlanta, Dr. Sonji Phillips and I chose to take the MARTA train from the airport to a quieter part of the city before heading to the conference venue. We purchased our tickets at a kiosk and boarded the train, pleasantly surprised by how clean and calm the environment was compared to the busy airport.
As the train moved smoothly through the city, the atmosphere was peaceful. Passengers were quietly observing the passing scenery or lost in their own thoughts. This calm was soon interrupted by a brief but impactful interaction that revealed the power of empathy and proactive help.
A Young Man’s Lost Phone and a Police Officer’s Quick Response
At one of the stops, a police officer boarded the train. Shortly after, a young man on a scooter entered, looking worried. I overheard part of his conversation with the officer. The young man had accidentally left his cell phone at a previous station and was trying to figure out how to retrieve it.
Losing a phone while traveling can be stressful. Phones hold more than just numbers; they contain directions, work contacts, and connections to loved ones. The young man’s frustration was clear, but what followed was a reminder of how small acts can make a big difference.
Instead of giving the young man a generic customer service number or telling him to return alone, the officer took immediate action. He called a colleague at the station where the phone was left and confirmed the phone had been found and secured. Then, he gave the young man clear instructions on how to get back to the station and even described the other officer’s appearance to help him find assistance quickly.
This brief exchange, lasting only a few minutes, showed genuine care and a willingness to help beyond the call of duty.

Why This Moment Matters
This encounter stood out because it highlighted several important lessons:
Empathy in action: The officer didn’t just listen; he acted to solve the problem.
Clear communication: Providing detailed instructions and descriptions helped the young man feel supported and confident.
Community care: Even in a busy city, people can look out for one another.
Small gestures have big impacts: A few minutes of attention can ease someone’s stress and turn a difficult situation into a positive experience.
For professionals attending conferences, this story is a reminder that meaningful connections and lessons often happen outside formal sessions. It also shows how kindness and support can create a welcoming environment, whether in transit or at an event.
Applying This Lesson in Everyday Life
We can all take inspiration from this moment and apply it in our daily routines:
When someone faces a problem, offer more than advice—offer help.
Communicate clearly and kindly, especially when giving directions or instructions.
Look for opportunities to support others, even in small ways.
Recognize that kindness can improve someone’s day and build stronger communities.
Whether at work, in public spaces, or during travel, these simple actions foster trust and connection.
Reflecting on the Journey Beyond the Conference
Our trip to the SOCA Conference was filled with valuable learning, but this brief encounter on the MARTA train reminded me that the human element is just as important as any keynote or workshop. The officer’s kindness and proactive approach made a lasting impression, showing that professionalism includes compassion.
Next time you find yourself in a situation where someone needs help, remember this story. Taking a moment to assist can turn a stressful moment into a hopeful one. It’s a lesson in kindness that travels far beyond any conference room.
